Truly understanding someone can take years—or just minutes, if you know where to look. It's not about judging by appearance or believing what people say about themselves. The real clues are in the subtle behaviors and instinctive reactions that speak louder than words.

Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, believed that a person's character is most clearly revealed in everyday, unguarded moments. According to Jung, if you want to uncover someone's true nature, there are two key aspects you need to observe. His simple yet powerful insight offers a deeper way to see people as they truly are.

Two delicate signs that reveal true character

Jung believed that character is not revealed through grand declarations or sustained roles, but through the way people behave when there is no reward or audience. He identified two main indicators:

1. How one treats those who cannot give anything in return                                                                          Observe how someone interacts with people without power—such as service staff, strangers, or vulnerable individuals. When someone is kind, respectful, and caring in these situations, it reflects empathy and integrity. Conversely, those who are dismissive or rude often reveal arrogance or a lack of moral depth.

2. How does one deal with frustration?

The way someone reacts when things go wrong—when they encounter delays, setbacks, or unexpected challenges—says a lot. Does they explode, blame others, or get angry? Or do they remain calm, take responsibility, and show resilience? These are the moments that test emotional maturity, humility, and self-control. As Jung noted, character is not revealed in comfort, but in crisis.

Other ways to understand someone more deeply

Besides these two indicators, other behaviors can provide important information about a person's inner world:

Sense of humor:  The type of jokes someone makes can betray pent-up emotions—be it compassion, criticism, insecurity, or even hostility.

How he speaks about others:  Frequent gossiping or criticism often indicates inner dissatisfaction or projection.

How well he listens:  Genuine listening without interrupting or dominating is a sign of emotional awareness and respect.

How he uses his power:  Few things reveal as much about someone as his behavior when he has authority or influence.

By paying attention to these small but telling details, we can learn more about a person's true nature—without waiting years. As Jung emphasized, character is revealed not in what is shown, but in what quietly happens... if we are paying attention.
