From insecure teenager to television star — she almost died at birth

 

Before becoming a duchess, before the flashes, the controversies, and the millions of eyes fixed on her, Meghan Markle was just a teenager like so many others. A girl a little lost, a little different, torn between two cultures and very far removed from the hushed world of grand ceremonies.

And yet, this young woman who used to eat microwaved meals   in front of the TV one day changed the world. Or at least, the way she found her place in it.

A childhood outside the box

Born in Los Angeles to an African-American mother and a white father, Meghan felt very early on what it was like to  "not fit in ." Neither entirely black, nor entirely white, often perceived as one, never fully recognized as the other.

She spent her childhood between her father's film shoots—he was a cinematographer—and long days waiting at home. She describes herself as a  "locked-in kid ,  " meaning a child who walked home from school alone and stayed home by herself.  Independent too early, grown up too fast. And yet, she still looks back on those years with affection. A salad bar for  $4.99 (about €4.60)  ? For her, it was a luxury. Her mother, Doria? A strong woman, her quiet pillar of support.

A teenager like any other… or almost

"I wasn't the pretty one."  Meghan often repeated this phrase. She was the brainy one, the sensible one, the one who was already writing impassioned letters at 11 years old to denounce a sexist advertisement. A  determined young girl , even then.

But adolescence was not kind. Her appearance, her mixed heritage, her ambition: everything seemed to set her apart. Even later, in the film industry, she would be judged  "too white"  for some roles,  "not black enough"  for others. This in-between position often weighed heavily on her.

From Hollywood to royalty

It was in the series  Suits  that the world finally discovered Meghan. Charismatic, intelligent, magnetic. And a few years later, it was alongside Prince Harry that she made her entrance into history.

A fairytale royal wedding, two adorable children,  international popularity … but also crushing pressure. Beneath the glitz and glamour, the reality proved more complex.

A maternity ward under high tension

In 2025, in her podcast  Confessions of a Female Founder , Meghan revealed a harrowing moment: after one of her deliveries, she nearly lost her life due to  preeclampsia that occurred after childbirth .

This rare and serious complication confronted her with the worst.  "We try to be there for our children... but these are moments of real fear ," she confides emotionally.

And as if that weren't enough, she also suffered a miscarriage shortly afterwards. A pain she bravely chose to recount in a poignant op-ed.

A voice that carries

Today, Meghan Markle is no longer just a former actress, a former duchess, or an icon. She is a woman who has chosen to speak out. About her past, her wounds, her struggles.

She didn't have a perfect life. She had an  authentic life . And that's precisely what makes her so inspiring.

Because behind the tiara, there is a woman. A mother. A fighter. And above all, a voice that no longer trembles.
