A strange photo has been circulating on social media for the past few hours; here's the explanation.

Impressive feathers, a colorful crest, a piercing gaze… Enough to send shivers down your spine and spark a flurry of questions. On Reddit, users launched all sorts of theories, ranging from a mutant parrot to a baby dragon.  The buzz had begun , fueled by the mixture of fascination and concern the image evoked. The more it was shared, the deeper the mystery became.

The experts' verdict: a rare and splendid bird

Fortunately, experts quickly solved the mystery. The creature was nothing to worry about: it was simply a  resplendent quetzal , one of the most  remarkable birds  on the planet. Native to the rainforests of Central America, from Guatemala to Panama, it is recognizable by its emerald green plumage, bright red breast, and especially its long tail feathers that seem to float in the air.

Even in photos, it is fascinating. But those who are lucky enough to see it in real life describe an almost magical experience: its colors change with the light, going from green to blue, as if the bird were surrounded by a luminous halo.

This almost mythical dimension  undoubtedly contributes to the current fascination with this bird, which seems to have come straight from another world.

But behind this buzz lies a less joyful reality: the quetzal is now classified as a near-threatened species. Deforestation and poaching are gradually shrinking its habitat, making sightings increasingly rare. For ornithologists, however, this sudden  viral fame  can become an opportunity: to draw attention to the need to protect these living treasures and the forests that shelter them.

As a Guatemalan specialist points out:  "The quetzal is not a danger. It is the quetzal that is in danger. And every photo shared should be an opportunity to talk about conservation."
