"The bravest little boy in the world," aged 8, died trying to save his mother in an act of bravery that shocked an entire small town.

An evening that takes a turn for the worse in a small town in Illinois.

On the evening of May 13, law enforcement was called to a home in De Soto following a  domestic violence report in the United States . Upon arrival, they discovered a horrific scene: a woman, Deborah Snider, was found unconscious, while her 8-year-old son, Leland "Lee" Arnett, had suffered severe head injuries after being struck with a baseball bat. According to court documents, the alleged perpetrator was Marcus Moultrie, 36, the mother's partner. Both were airlifted by medical helicopter to a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite medical care, the young boy died a few days later, on May 17, plunging his family into a devastating grief. Police were called around 11 p.m., shortly after the incident, prompting a swift response to the scene.

A child described as protective to the very end

As the testimonies unfolded, Leland Arnett was described as a particularly caring and protective child towards his mother. His great-aunt, Anne Donlan Andrew, explained that he had tried to intervene to defend her during the attack. The family also emphasized a powerful symbolic gesture: the donation of his organs, presented as his "final act of heroism." Those close to him remember him most for his smile, his gentle nature, and the way he brought joy to those around him, even in the simplest everyday situations. His family insisted that he acted instinctively to protect his mother, an act that deeply affected all who knew him.

The investigation continues into the case of 36-year-old Marcus Moultrie, who has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Prosecutors cite aggravating circumstances related to the particularly brutal nature of the violence. Moultrie has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. According to court documents, he is scheduled to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing before a trial set to begin on July 6. Authorities emphasize that the case is still under investigation and that all elements must be verified. The upcoming hearings will be crucial for the continuation of the legal proceedings.
