Picture an imposing man with a kind smile, delicately holding a ukulele in his massive hands. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole , affectionately known as Iz by his fans, shattered all the stereotypes of the traditional pop star. It was precisely this authenticity that forged his iconic status.

His fusion of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" is like a gentle caress for the soul. In just a few notes, he transports us to a dreamlike journey, far above the worries of everyday life. This version, with its almost ethereal lightness , continues to resonate with generations.

May 20, 2020 marked what would have been Iz's 61st birthday . To mark the occasion, Google paid tribute to him with an animated Doodle capturing the essence of his legendary 1993 recording. A powerful testament to the enduring impact of his art.

Yet, behind that angelic voice lay a constant struggle. Battling morbid obesity and various health problems, he left us prematurely on June 26, 1997, at only 38 years old. His death, caused by heart failure, plunged Hawaii into mourning. His funeral, attended by an immense crowd, remains one of the largest in the archipelago's history . His ashes now rest off Makua Beach , a setting as serene as his melodies.

A belated but well-deserved French recognition

In France, his work was discovered long after his death. Iz began his career with the group The Makaha Sons of NiΚ»ihau in 1976, with whom he produced eleven albums steeped in Hawaiian traditions. His solo career launched in 1993 gave rise to what would become a musical landmark.

It wasn't until 2010 that the French public truly discovered his genius, thanks to Universal Music which released his repertoire. His name then became prominent in the French charts , proving that true talent always finds its audience, even posthumously.

A legacy that transcends generations
