Don't throw away used tea bags: 7 useful ways to use them at home

Most people throw away their tea bags as soon as they make their drink. But it turns out that they can be useful even after that. While some popular tips on the internet are greatly exaggerated, there are a number of completely real applications that can save you money and make your everyday life easier.

Here are seven practical ways to reuse tea bags.

1. Reduces puffiness around the eyes

This is one of the most famous and actually working applications. After using the packet, let it cool in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes. Then place it on your closed eyelids for a few minutes.

The cold helps constrict blood vessels, and the caffeine in black and green tea can further reduce puffiness and signs of fatigue.

2. Additive to compost

Tea leaves are organic material and can be safely added to compost. They decompose relatively quickly and enrich the mixture with beneficial substances.

It is only important that the bag is made of paper or other biodegradable material. Some modern bags contain plastic fibers and are not suitable for composting.

3. They help soak up greasy dishes

If you have heavily soiled pans or dishes, drop a few used tea bags into warm water and let them sit overnight.

This will not replace dishwashing detergent, but it often makes it easier to clean dried-on grease and food residue.

4. Freshens the smell in the refrigerator

Dried tea bags can absorb some of the unpleasant odors. Place a few in a small bowl and leave them in the refrigerator for a few days.

They are not as effective as baking soda, but they can help freshen the air and reduce unpleasant odors.

5. Removes unpleasant odors from shoes

Once the tea bags are completely dry, place them in your shoes overnight. The dried tea leaves can absorb some of the moisture and help reduce odors.

6. Cleaning mirrors and glass surfaces

You can make a weak tea from used tea bags and, once it has cooled, apply it to mirrors or glass surfaces with a soft cloth. The tannins in the tea can help remove light grease marks and dirt.

Finally, wipe with a dry microfiber cloth for a better shine and fewer marks.

7. Relieving minor irritation after insect bites

A cooled, wet tea bag can be placed for a few minutes on the site of a mosquito or other insect bite.

The cold itself helps reduce itching and discomfort, and the tannins contained in the tea have a slight astringent effect on the skin.

While not a cure, it is a popular home remedy for temporary relief.
