But what became of the two children from the iconic music video who captivated the entire world? Their destiny, far from the spotlight, has taken a turn as surprising as it is inspiring.

The "Lambada" phenomenon: a meteoric global success

In 1989, the group Kaoma propelled the song Lambada to the top of the international charts. With its catchy melody, vibrant rhythm, and sensual choreography, the combination was explosive. The music video, filmed in Brazil, features two energetic children performing the famous dance with astonishing ease.

The whole world then discovered Chico and Roberta. They were only 10 and 12 years old respectively, but within weeks became the faces of a global hit. In school playgrounds and at summer parties, people tried to imitate their dance moves with varying degrees of success.

This sudden fame is enough to make your head spin… especially when you’re still in primary school.

Chico and Roberta: child stars thrust into the spotlight

Behind their stage names are Washington Oliveira, originally from Porto Seguro, and Roberta de Brito, from Brasília. Their naturalness and on-screen chemistry greatly contributed to the charm of the music video.

Riding the wave of the song's enormous success, they quickly formed the duo Chico and Roberta. In 1990, they released the album Face to Face, featuring tracks written in part by Loalwa Braz, the iconic voice of Kaoma. Two singles achieved considerable success, particularly in France.

On paper, everything seems to be in place for a promising music career: interviews, photo shoots, TV appearances… But growing up in the spotlight is not always easy.

Growing up away from the spotlight: a conscious lifestyle choice

Like many children thrust into the spotlight at a young age, Chico and Roberta eventually yearned for a quieter life. Over time, they realized that music wasn't necessarily their long-term path.

Rather than clinging to a fragile reputation, they make a courageous choice: to turn the page and build a future in line with their deepest aspirations.

Today, Washington Oliveira – our famous Chico – has become a pastor in a Protestant church in his hometown of Porto Seguro. A 180-degree turn that may seem surprising, but which reflects a quest for meaning and personal commitment.

Roberta, on the other hand, followed a completely different path: she became a veterinarian. A profession focused on the care and passion of animals, far removed from stages and recording studios.

Another form of success

What is fascinating about their journey is not just the contrast between their glamorous childhood and their current life, but the freedom with which they have redefined their success.

They didn't marry; each started their own family and leads a life away from the media frenzy. No scandals, no exploited nostalgia: simply two adults who managed to transform an extraordinary experience into a precious memory, without turning it into a prison.
