At 70, Robyn transformed her savings into a village for elderly women, combining independence and solidarity in a unique living environment.

At 70, some women dream of travel, others of rest… and then there's Robyn, who chose to completely transform her life. Instead of keeping her savings to herself, this American woman conceived a project as simple as it was audacious: creating a living space designed specifically for older women. A place where they can remain independent while having neighbors right next door. An idea that, at first glance, seems almost utopian… and yet, it truly exists.

A village unlike any other, born in the heart of Texas

It was in the state of Texas, about an hour from Dallas, that Robyn brought her project, The Bird's Nest, to life. On an area of ​​approximately 5 acres, or just over 2 hectares, she envisioned a small community made up of   individual tiny houses .

Today, the site is home to about ten retired women, each living in their own tiny house. The goal is not to create a traditional residence, but a true village on a human scale, where each woman retains her privacy while being part of a vibrant community.

Far from the isolation sometimes felt in large buildings, here, residents can greet each other, chat in the garden, or share a moment in the common areas. A simple setup, but one designed to rebuild connections on a daily basis.

An idea born from a very personal need

The story of this project begins in a very concrete way. Robyn discovered the world of tiny houses by watching the show Tiny House Nation. At the time, she had limited resources, but a strong desire: to remain independent while building a stable living space.

She started modestly, buying a small house, then gradually acquiring land. Little by little, she invested all her savings in what would become The Bird's Nest.

This choice requires courage, but also a true vision: that of a place designed to meet an often underestimated need, that of loneliness among the elderly.

A community that was built step by step

In 2021, another retiree, Huff, joined the adventure. Together, they actively participated in developing the land. Planting, installing electricity, accessing water, connecting to the internet… each step was built with patience and determination.

Nothing is left to chance, but everything is done in a collaborative spirit. The objective is clear: to create an environment where everyone can live comfortably, without being entirely dependent on external structures.

Over time, the project attracts attention and gains visibility, notably thanks to the mini-series Tiny Home Expedition, which highlights this  alternative lifestyle .

A simple answer to a very real problem

Beyond its original aspect, The Bird's Nest responds to a very concrete reality: the feeling of isolation that many elderly people can experience, as well as the sometimes high cost of housing.

By offering more affordable rents and a collective organization, this village offers an alternative between totally independent living and more medicalized structures.

Here, everyone keeps their personal space, but no one is truly alone. A neighbor is always nearby, a conversation can easily start, and bonds are formed naturally.
