Who will be able to find the correct answer?

Think you're a whiz at mental math? Those simple equations from middle school pose no problem for you? Just wait until you see this math riddle circulating on social media. Behind its apparent simplicity lies a subtlety that many overlook… And yet, the solution is within everyone's reach. Can you find the right answer without the help of your phone? Stopwatch in hand, let's go!

A little problem straight out of our middle school days…

Remember those math exercises we thought were "too easy" in class? Adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying… At first glance, it seems like child's play. But when you mix up the operations and add one or two well-placed parentheses, it suddenly becomes much more interesting!

Here is today's statement:

15 – 1 x (12 ÷ 4 + 1) = ?

Take a minute to think about it… and be careful not to fall into the trap that many people do!

What if you were wrong from the start?

The first essential step: respecting the order of operations. A classic lesson we  all learned  in middle school, but sometimes forget. As a reminder:

  • Parentheses first
  • Then multiplication and division.
  • And finally, addition and subtraction.

Step-by-step breakdown of the solution

Let's look together at how to solve this equation:

Step 1: We start with the parenthesis

In this parenthesis, we have 12 ÷ 4 + 1 .

First, the division:
12 ÷ 4 = 3.
Then we add 1:
3 + 1 = 4.

The parenthesis therefore becomes 4.

Step 2: We replace the parenthesis in the main equation

This now gives us:
15 – 1 x 4

And this is where many people go wrong! You might want to do 15 – 1, then multiply the result by 4… But no!

Remember: multiplication is done BEFORE subtraction.

1 x 4 = 4

Step 3: Final operation

Therefore, we subtract:
15 – 4 = 11

Answer

The correct answer is therefore 11!

And you, did you find it on the first try?

If so, congratulations! You've maintained the mental agility of a math whiz . And if you got tricked? Don't worry, you're not alone! This kind of test is designed to jog our brains… and remind us that a little refresher on math rules never hurts.

Why do we like these kinds of puzzles?

  • Because they are fun: a quick little challenge, no need for a pen or calculator.
  • Because they stimulate our logic and memory.
  • Because they awaken school memories that are sometimes buried deep.
  • And because they are perfect to share with  friends or family  !

The next time you encounter a "small" problem like this... you'll know how to approach it!
