We love optical illusions… until our brains start malfunctioning. That's exactly what happened with this viral photo: six girls sitting on a sofa, but only five pairs of legs visible. The internet exploded, Reddit was abuzz, everyone tried to solve this "mystery" worthy of a visual escape room. But what if, deep down, this optical illusion revealed as much about our brains as it does about our eyes?
Why is our brain so easily fooled by a simple photograph?

Before even zooming in on the legs, it's important to understand something: our brain doesn't like uncertainty. Faced with a blurry, poorly framed, or cluttered image, it fills in the gaps, reorganizes the information, and… sometimes, gets it completely wrong.
Optical illusions rely precisely on this mechanism: our vision captures one piece of information, our brain interprets another. As a result, we get the impression that a detail doesn't quite fit—in this case, that a pair of legs is completely missing. And the more we stare at the image, the more the confusion grows.
The illusion of six girls and five pairs of legs

The now-famous photo, posted on Reddit, shows six young women sitting side-by-side on a sofa. Nothing unusual at first glance, until you notice a disturbing detail: at the bottom, there are only five pairs of legs.
Naturally, the internet did what it does best: theories, close-ups, drawings, arrows, red circles… Some suggested the legs had been erased, the angle was misleading, or even that the photo had been retouched. Others were convinced that the second girl simply didn't have any legs visible. In short, a joyful, collective visual chaos.
What we see… and what is really happening

The key to the illusion lies with the first two girls on the left of the image. Their legs are so perfectly aligned that they appear to belong to a single person.
The first girl has her legs crossed, with no cut at the knee. The second is wearing jeans with a rip right at the knee, but her other leg is almost visually "hidden" behind her neighbor's. The nuances of the fabric, the folds, and the angle of the photo create a perfect overlap.
As a result, our brain instinctively groups these legs into a single "block" and believes a pair is missing, when in fact they are all there, perfectly aligned.
When a simple detail changes the entire perception

One internet user even took the time to draw lines, number the girls, and explain the scene step by step. By following the seams of the jeans, the tears at the knees, and the position of the feet, everything suddenly becomes clear:
- The second girl does indeed have both legs.
- They are visually indistinguishable from those of the first one.
- The third and fourth ones lean slightly forward, which adds to the confusion.
It's a bit like when a photo seems to show a "missing" arm in a group: no magic, just a mix of angles, colors, and overlays.
What this illusion teaches us about ourselves
Beyond its playful aspect, this image illustrates something essential: our brain loves speed. It interprets, simplifies, and makes judgments. We think we "see" reality, when we often only see a partial or biased version.
Optical illusions remind us that a simple change of perspective, a zoom, or a shift in gaze can alter everything. And in life, as in this photo, sometimes the solution is right in front of us… but we need it pointed out to perceive it clearly.
So, the next time an image disturbs you, take it as a little training for the mind: breathe, observe differently… and accept that our eyes like to play tricks on us, even with a very simple visual illusion .
