The world's first surviving septuplets celebrate their 26th birthday

In November 1997, the world discovered the extraordinary story of Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey, an Iowa couple who became parents of seven babies: Kenny Jr., Alexis, Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, Brandon, and Joel. Born nine weeks premature, these children represented a true medical miracle—the first septuplets in the world to survive. Their arrival transformed the lives of their young parents, who already had an older daughter, Mikayla. For the first few weeks, their home was swarming with journalists and television crews. The family was even invited onto the Oprah Winfrey Show to celebrate the children's first birthday, a truly memorable moment.

A difficult start, but full of love

The McCaugheys had to face an extraordinary daily routine: on average, 52 diapers and 42 bottles a day! Fortunately, the public's generosity greatly eased their burden.

The couple received a house of nearly 500 square meters , a van, diapers, food, and even university scholarships for each of the children.

Despite everything, Bobbi and Kenny chose to remain simple and close to nature, growing their own vegetables to provide for their large family.

Two of the children, Alexis and Nathan, were born with cerebral palsy, but thanks to operations and their determination, they have gradually gained independence.

Independent young adults

All the septuplets graduated from high school before going their separate ways.

Natalie, Kelsey, Nathan, and Joel continued their studies at Hannibal LaGrange University in Missouri, while Kenny and Alexis attended Des Moines Area Community College. Brandon, on the other hand, chose the military path, enlisting in the U.S. Army.
For the first time, each of them experienced independence.

“Growing up, we were always together, no matter what we did,” Kelsey says. “Going to university allowed us to discover ourselves individually. We’re no longer just septuplets: we’ve become individuals.”

New steps and new dreams

As the years passed, the septuplets pursued their respective passions. Natalie married in 2019 and is pursuing a career in sports. Brandon also married that same year. Alexis, passionate about education, hopes to teach at the primary school level and advocates for children with special needs.

Joel and Nathan, both computer scientists, dream of working in cybersecurity, with one of them even hoping to join Google.
They all share a strong bond, forged by an exceptional childhood and unwavering solidarity.

26 years later: a united and grateful family

Now 26 years old, the McCaugheys have each left home while remaining close to their parents and older sister.
In 2015, Mikayla, the firstborn, got married and gave birth to the family's first grandchild.

The “miracle babies” of 1997 are now accomplished adults, grateful to their parents for their love, courage, and faith.

As Natalie says, "With six siblings of the same age, we're not just a family, we're also the best of friends."

A  beautiful story of perseverance and family love  that continues to inspire the whole world.
