Mix baby oil with cloves and prepare to be surprised

Are mosquitoes crashing every outdoor drink? Instead of using chemicals, why not try a simple homemade concoction made with just two ingredients: baby oil and cloves? This unexpected duo has everything going for it: it smells great, provides natural protection, moisturizes the skin, and costs next to nothing. And best of all, it really works!

Why is this mixture so effective?

The secret lies in cloves, a spice well-known for its warm, spicy aroma. Behind this powerful scent is a molecule called  eugenol , which acts as a natural repellent.
Insects hate this intense smell, while for us, it evokes the holiday season!

Baby oil, on the other hand, plays a dual role:

  • It softens the skin while forming a light protective film;
  • It prolongs the diffusion of the clove fragrance, for lasting effectiveness.

The result: hydrated, lightly scented skin and above all… mosquitoes that keep their distance.

How to make your own homemade repellent

You only need a few minutes of preparation (and a little patience for the infusion).

Ingredients :

  • 35 ml of baby oil (or mild olive oil if you prefer a natural version)
  • 6 whole cloves
  • A small, dark glass bottle with a cap or dropper.

Preparation :

  1. Heat the oil over very low heat, then remove it before it starts to simmer.
  2. Add the cloves and let it cool naturally.
  3. Pour everything into the bottle and let it sit for  10 to 15 days away from light .
  4. Filter, shake before use and apply a few drops to the arms, ankles or lower legs.

Tip:  Always test a small amount on your skin before first use to check tolerance.

Other equally effective natural alternatives

No cloves at home? Don't panic, nature is full of solutions to keep unwanted pests away:

  • Crushed mint leaves: to be placed near windows.
  • Lavender essential oil: a few drops in your moisturizer for a soothing scent.
  • Eucalyptus: boil leaves in water and spray the decoction on curtains or window frames.
  • Sweet almond oil + basil + geranium: a perfect combination for a gentle repellent suitable for children.

These simple little gestures create a  naturally protective atmosphere , while leaving a fresh and pleasant scent in the house.

Usage instructions and precautions

This homemade mixture is gentle, but like any product applied to the skin, it's best to remain cautious:

  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • For children, apply only to covered areas and never to hands or face.
  • Keep the bottle away from heat and light.

Properly prepared, your repellent will keep for up to six months. If the smell changes, it's best to throw it away and make a new one.

A gesture of beauty and well-being at the same time

In addition to its repellent effect, this blend moisturizes the skin and leaves it subtly scented. It's a dual-action product:  a natural mosquito repellent  and a soothing body oil. Perfect after a day in the sun!

So, the next time mosquitoes crash your summer parties, take out your little homemade bottle: your skin will thank you, and they will flee.

This just goes to show that sometimes the most effective solution is hidden in the bathroom cupboards.
