If a snake enters your house, scatter these items around it: it will be frightened and will immediately disappear.

It's a scene that can be quite frightening: you spot a snake moving in your garden, or even approaching your house. The natural reaction is panic. Yet, in most cases, these reptiles prefer to avoid human contact and are simply looking for shelter or food. So, what can you do to keep them away, without endangering you or those around you?

Citronella: a natural repellent

This plant with its fresh and pungent scent is not only an ally against mosquitoes! Its powerful odor also bothers snakes.

  • Plant a few lemongrass plants around the house, in flowerbeds or along fence lines.
  • Alternatively, use citronella essential oil: soak a cotton ball or spray a mixture  of water and a few drops of essential oil  near entrances or in areas where you fear their presence.

The result: an  olfactory barrier  that makes the environment less welcoming to them.

Salt and garlic: a homemade solution

A simple and readily available mixture can also deter snakes:

  1. Crush some fresh garlic and mix it with coarse salt.
  2. Sprinkle this mixture around strategic areas: doors, windows,  garden sheds , fences.

The strong smell and unpleasant texture  of the mixture discourage reptiles from going any further.

Beware of toxic products

Some people suggest realgar powder (arsenic sulfide) as an effective repellent. However, this product is highly toxic, not only to snakes but also to humans, pets, and the environment.  Its use is strongly discouraged , especially if you have children or pets at home.

The right things to do in case of an encounter

If a snake enters your home or hides in a hard-to-reach place:

  • Do not attempt to capture or manipulate it yourself.
  • Get everyone out of the room and contact a specialist professional (firefighter, licensed capture company).
  • You can also encourage it to come out gently with a  jet of water from the garden hose , while keeping a safe distance.

Most often, the snake will move away on its own if you leave it an exit.

Prevention is better than cure: a well-maintained exterior

Snakes love dark, cool hiding places:

  • Mow the lawn regularly.
  • Get rid of  dense brush , piles of wood or leaves too close to the house.
  • Avoid leaving food sources lying around ( food scraps, seeds, compostable waste ) which attract rodents – themselves prey for snakes.

A clean, clear and well-maintained garden greatly reduces the risk of intrusion.

In summary

Snakes generally do not seek confrontation: with a few simple actions and natural repellents like citronella or garlic,  you can secure your home while respecting local biodiversity.

A snake seen  is not necessarily a threat  : keep calm, secure the area… and let nature take its course.
