The little girl, sitting at the table, innocently plays with her spoon while watching her mother.
"Mom, while you were at work, a strange lady came to the house."
Mom, busy putting away the groceries, stopped abruptly.
"A strange lady? We'll see about that when Dad gets home."
The tone is curt, but the little girl shrugs, not at all impressed.
A few hours later, Dad arrives. He has barely put down his briefcase when Mom stares at him, arms crossed, looking ready for a fight.
"So, tell Dad what you told me earlier," she asks the little girl.
The little girl jumped up from her chair, overexcited.
"A lady came, Daddy! She was very pretty, with a sparkly red dress. She said she came to help you find your... documents?"
Dad, taken aback, froze. His complexion turned off-white, and he began to stammer:
"Uh... documents, you say?"
The little girl, delighted to have all the attention, continued:
"Yes! And then she said it was more comfortable in the bedroom. So you went upstairs."
An icy silence filled the room. Mom stared at Dad with eyes that flashed like lightning.
"What is she saying?" she asks, her jaw clenched.
Dad tries to sidestep the issue:
"Oh, you know, children, they're always inventing things..."
But the little girl, not at all inclined to be silent, continued:
"No, no, it's true! I looked through the keyhole! You were doing strange things. It was a bit like you and Uncle Jack the other day, Mummy, except the lady was laughing a lot more."
Dad, who was drinking a glass of water, coughed it all up.
"Excuse me?! Uncle Jack?!"
Mother blushed furiously, her hands trembling.
"You must have misunderstood, my dear."
But the little girl insisted, categorically:
"No, it was the same! Except that Uncle Jack made funny faces while we were jumping on the bed! And you, Mom, you were always saying, 'Oh Jack, you're so strong!'"
Dad burst into a bitter laugh, crossed his arms, and looked at Mom.
"So, Mom? What's this business with Uncle Jack?"
Mom, panicked, tries to regain control:
"She has a very active imagination, you know how she is..."
But the little girl wasn't finished:
"And you, Dad, you were telling the lady in red that she had the most beautiful legs you'd ever seen! Mom, did you know that Dad likes legs?"
The silence that followed was even heavier than the previous ones. Dad and Mom stared at each other like two cowboys in a duel.
Finally, Mom yells:
"That's enough for tonight! Off to bed now!"
The little girl skipped around in her room, delighted to have told everything.
Dad then turns to Mom, a sly smile playing at the corners of his lips:
"So, Jack is too strong, huh?"
Mom glares at him, grabs a cushion, and throws it in his face:
"Shut up or you're sleeping on the couch tonight."
Dad bursts out laughing and whispers,
"You'd better reserve the avocado, darling. It's going to be a real pleasure explaining all this..."
