According to an international study, limiting our emissions may not be enough to stop the climate crisis. Experts warn of unprecedented consequences that threaten the decades to come.

Global warming could reach +7°C by 2200

A study conducted by climate scientists at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) reveals alarming projections. Their simulations show that our planet could experience a temperature increase of up to 7°C before the end of the 22nd century. This scenario holds true even in cases where greenhouse gas emissions are kept below the targets set by the Paris Agreement.

This forecast is based on an innovative climate model, CLIMBER-X, which incorporates parameters often neglected such as the complex interactions between different natural systems .

The domino effect of climatic mechanisms

The Earth's climate operates according to a runaway principle: certain phenomena triggered by warming contribute to amplifying it. These examples illustrate this:

• The melting of permafrost releases enormous quantities of greenhouse gases trapped for millennia.

• Wetlands and waste storage sites emit increasing amounts of methane, the climate impact of which far exceeds that of CO₂ .

Scientists stress that time is running out. Only a drastic and rapid reduction in emissions could make it possible to meet the targets of limiting global warming to +1.5°C or +2°C set by international agreements.
