When they saw her childhood photo, her fans were amazed.

Nicole Kidman's rise to fame in Hollywood wasn't easy. Today, everyone knows her as a three-time Golden Globe winner. She's also the first Australian to win the Academy Award for Best Actress.

But as a child, she had great self-doubt.

Nicole Mary Kidman was born on June 20, 1967, in Hawaii to Australian parents. She is the older of two daughters born to Anthony and Janelle Kidman.

From an early age, little Nicole always wanted to be an actress like Margaret Hamilton. But she had great fears about her beauty, and she was also very shy.

In a 2014 interview with InStyle, Kidman said she made up an interesting story about herself for her Australian friends. "I pretended to the kids at school that I was born right on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu," she told the magazine. "I was actually born in a hospital, but it sounded good and they believed me."

Today's star stuttered as a child. Because of this, she was very shy and afraid to communicate with peers. The girl's parents took her to lessons in a ballet studio, where she showed excellent dancing and acting talent. Soon Nicole began working with speech therapists, who helped to correct the defect.

In 1983, at the age of 16, Nicole made her film debut in the Australian holiday classic Bush Christmas. The following year, she played a supporting role in The Five-Mile Creek. In 1989, Kidman earned her first Saturn Award nomination.

The Hollywood newcomer was determined to break records. In 1991, the already popular Nicole Kidman was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in Billy Bathgate.

In 1995, Nicole already won the Globe for her role as Susan Stone in the film "To Die For...". 2002 was an emblematic year for the now mature actress - she won an Oscar for Virginia Woolf's piano in "The Hours."

The red-haired Australian showed the world what she was capable of. Today, her name is known all over the world.
