Jim Carrey is one of the most recognizable comedians in the world, but as a child he was not at all the bright and energetic actor we know today.

Born in Canada in 1962, he grew up in an ordinary family and his childhood was far from carefree.

When Jim was 15 years old, his family faced serious financial difficulties and the boy even had to work as a cleaner.

In childhood photos, Carrey is an ordinary boy with big eyes, neatly combed hair, and a shy smile. If you showed these photos to someone today, few would recognize the future Ace Ventura or The Mask.

Jim Carrey's early years in Canada were far from easy. He struggled to help his family financially after his father lost his job in Toronto. During this time, Jim Carrey's family had to live in a van for a while.

Eventually, his father got a job at a tire factory. The young Jim Carrey also started working there, along with his siblings. They had to work eight hours a day after school as janitors and security guards at the factory so the family could somehow make ends meet.

The future millionaire and public favorite, as a teenager, washed and cleaned toilets and common areas in the large industrial plant.

Jim Carrey was a terribly lonely child. When asked if his childhood was bright and memorable, he made an unusual admission:

"Well, I spent most of my time in my room looking at myself in the mirror. I never knew who I could talk to."

Unfortunately, this isn't the last dark period in the actor's life. One of Carey's ex-girlfriends, makeup artist Cathriona White, committed suicide in 2015. Their relationship had its ups and downs, and they broke up several times, including a week before her death.

He says he spent hours making faces in front of the mirror.

But one thing remained unchanged - his smile. It was always a part of his personality, even when life presented him with challenges.

"She was truly a sweet and gentle Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, for whom love and being loved were all that shone," a shocked Kerry said at the time.

Despite the difficulties, even as a child, Jim never stopped dreaming of the stage. He practiced in front of the mirror, making different faces, and gradually improving his skills.
