Actor Val Kilmer has died at the age of 65. His daughter Mercedes told the New York Times that he died on April 1 of pneumonia. Kilmer had also been battling throat cancer for a long time.
The actor has been active on social media, and his latest Instagram video has touched his fans. The video shows Kilmer donning a Batman mask. In 1995, he played the legendary superhero in the film Batman Forever.
Kilmer is also known for his roles in "Top Gun" and "The Doors."
Shortly before her death, the star shared her final Instagram post, in which she is with her friend, American musician, actor, and podcaster David Chow. The clip was originally posted in 2021.
In the video, the actor talks to his friend before saying "it's been a while" and trying on a custom Batman mask made for him by Chow.
Throwing things back to the 1995 film, Kilmer stares into the camera like the superhero.
Val Kilmer was also an artist, with his last Instagram post featuring one of his paintings.
Published just under two weeks before his death, he wrote of the work:
“It has that late-night glow.
Cool tones with a faint burn, like when a campfire is going cold but you're still awake."
The Tombstone actor had listed the painting for sale on his website.
Val Kilmer's final role came in 2022, when he made a cameo appearance in the sequel to the blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick," despite being unable to speak due to his throat cancer, which was discovered in 2024.
He underwent both radiation therapy and chemotherapy. He also underwent a tracheostomy, which damaged his vocal cords and affected his voice.
The actor discussed his diagnosis and recovery in his 2020 memoir, "I'm Your Huckleberry," and Amazon Prime documentary Val.
"Obviously I sound a lot worse than I feel," Kilmer says in the film.
"I can't talk without plugging that hole (in his throat). You have to make the choice to breathe or eat."
