The effects of marijuana overuse on memory

The effects of marijuana overuse on memory

The controversy surrounding the effects of cannabis persists, particularly regarding its impact on long-term memory. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open reveals a link between excessive consumption and impairments in working memory, raising crucial questions about the effects of cannabis.

An analysis of heavy users: who is affected?

The study examined  1,003 individuals aged 22 to 36 who had used cannabis  at least 1,000 times  in their lifetime. In other words,  someone who had been using cannabis daily for about three years  would be included in this category.

The conclusions are explicit:

63% of participants  showed a  decrease in brain activity  in areas associated with working memory.

However,  what are the concrete implications of this  ?

Working memory versus long-term memory: what are the differences?

Unlike long-term memory, which allows  us to recall past events  working memory  helps us manage  daily activities . It comes into play when we:

  • Follow the instructions
  • Resolves a problem
  • Temporarily retains data

The study assessed this ability by  subjecting participants to cognitive tests , while monitoring their brain activity using MRI.  The result  : a  decrease in activity  in certain areas of the brain, suggesting that cannabis could  impact this crucial function .

Should we be worried about this?

According to  Joshua Godwin, Ph.D., a radiology professor at the University of Colorado  and lead author of the study,  further research is needed  to better understand these long-term effects.

This study does not imply that  all cannabis users  suffer from  memory problems . However, it highlights  a potential risk  for  heavy users , particularly in  contexts requiring rapid concentration and heightened responsiveness .

Cannabis and well-being: conflicting effects

Cannabis is the subject of numerous  scientific studies , with sometimes contradictory conclusions  .

Negative impacts:

Some studies have established a  link between daily consumption and an increased risk of heart failure .

Positive effects:

Other research indicates that it can  reduce inflammation, treat anxiety, and help lower blood pressure .

With increasing legalization,  24 US states now allow its recreational use and 40 its medical use . It is likely that these studies  will multiply  in the coming years.

Conclusion: Should we restrict our consumption?

If you regularly use cannabis, this study can serve as a  useful reminder  to adopt  a more measured approach . If  working memory is crucial in your daily life  (studies, work, quick decision-making), it may be  wise to consider how often you use it .

The effects of cannabis  vary from person to person , and research  continues to progress . However,  one thing remains certain  : as with any substance,  moderation is essential .
