Quand vous rรฉalisez… ๐Ÿคฏ

This optical illusion is driving internet users crazy, unable to tell which part of the body it's showing.

On X, this image is divisive: hairy neck or just an arm? Even with the answer, the doubt remains. Ready to test your gaze?

Think you have a sharp eye? Wait until you see this image. In just a few hours, a simple photo posted on the social network X has blown the minds of thousands of internet users. Some swear they see a long, thin, hairy neck. Others claim it's… an arm. And the most unsettling thing? Even knowing the answer, our brains sometimes refuse to believe it.

So, ready to test your perception?

A viral photo that divides internet users

It all started on February 22nd, when a user posted an intriguing close-up: a hairy area, a black leather accessory wrapped around it, and two different colored fabrics in the background. The caption ignited a firestorm: "I thought it was a terribly thin, hairy neck."

Within hours, shares exploded and comments multiplied. Between humor and bewilderment, many admitted they didn't understand what they were watching.

"I still have no idea what I'm looking at."
"Can someone explain? My eyes are moving!"

And that is precisely what makes this illusion so fascinating: it plays with our automatic visual reflexes.

Thin neck… or just an arm?

At first glance, the image might suggest a man with a very thin, hairy neck, wearing a black collar. The beige fabric in the background resembles a V-neck top, reinforcing the illusion.

But the reality is quite different.

It's actually a man's right arm. His hand is tucked into the pocket of beige trousers, and the black accessory isn't a necklace, but a bracelet. A photo taken from further away, found by another user, clearly shows the entire scene.

To understand it properly, you need to proceed in order: first identify the trouser pocket, then note the position of the wrist, and finally recognize the bracelet. By placing these elements in their context, the image becomes more coherent.

And yet, even after seeing the entire scene, many continue to perceive that famous "neck". That's the power of this  viral optical illusion .

Why does our brain make mistakes?

This phenomenon has a name: the bistable illusion. This means that our brain can interpret the same image in two different ways, without either being wrong to begin with.

A famous example? The dress that went viral in 2015: blue and black for some, white and gold for others. Our perception depends on the context, the perceived lighting, and our visual habits.

In the case of this photo, our brain immediately looks for a familiar shape. The association "neck + necklace" is common and logical. On the other hand, a hand in a pocket seen in extreme close-up is an unusual situation. As a result, it favors the most obvious interpretation, even if it is incorrect.

It's the same mechanism that makes us see faces in the clouds: our mind is constantly searching for familiar shapes.

Why are we so fascinated by these illusions?

If these images go viral, it's no accident. They provoke a slight sense of vertigo: we realize that our perception is not infallible.

We zoom in, we zoom out, we tilt the screen. We show the photo to those around us: "What do you see?" The debate begins and everyone defends their version with conviction.

These illusions create exchange and remind us that seeing does not always mean understanding.

How to “unblock” your gaze?

If you're still stuck on the "hairy neck" version, follow these steps in this order:

  1. Imagine that the hairy area is horizontal and not vertical.
  2. Picture a hand plunged into a trouser pocket.
  3. Focus on the black accessory as if it were encircling a wrist.

By doing so, the brain gradually reorganizes the information. Often, a single click is enough for the image to shift towards the correct interpretation. Once the arm is identified, it becomes difficult to see a neck again… even though some people still alternate between the two versions, proof of the power of this  intriguing viral photo .

So tell us: did you see a neck… or an arm at first glance?
