Pope Francis' final farewell: a death that shakes the Vatican at 88

St. Peter's Square was filled with intense emotion this Monday, April 21, marking the end of Pope Francis's pontificate. Struck by a sudden cerebral hemorrhage, the pontiff, known for his humanism and closeness to the faithful, passed away peacefully in his Vatican residence.

The news, made public by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, has shaken the global Catholic community. This spiritual leader, often affectionately called "the pope of the humble," leaves us with an unprecedented legacy of love and compassion.

A journey marked by devotion

Born in Buenos Aires as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he became Pope in 2013 as the 266th successor of Peter. This first Latin American pope breathed new life into the Church: a simple style, a warm relationship with the faithful, and an open approach to contemporary challenges.

Despite persistent health problems, Pope Francis maintained his commitment to the very end. His final pastoral trip in September 2024 took him to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Singapore, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to dialogue with peoples.

An emotional Easter

The day before his death, during the Easter blessing "Urbi et Orbi," a surprising gesture made a lasting impression. Against all expectations, the Bishop of Rome requested to make one last journey in the Popemobile. This unexpected choice for a man in his frail health took on a profoundly symbolic dimension.

Supported by his caregiver, he slowly crossed Saint Peter's Square for fifteen minutes. Blessings, smiles, and greetings created a moment etched in memories: the final encounter between a beloved pastor and his flock.

A smooth transition and memorable lyrics

After this intense moment of communion, the Pope returned to his apartments for a well-deserved rest. The dinner that followed was peaceful, but around dawn, at approximately 5:30 a.m., his condition suddenly deteriorated. With a final glimmer of consciousness, he waved goodbye to his nurse before losing consciousness. He passed away at 7:35 a.m., without agony.

That's when a particularly moving episode unfolded.

In his very last moments of lucidity, the Holy Father confided these poignant words to Massimiliano Strappetti, the nurse who had accompanied him during his long stay at the Gemelli hospital:

"Thank you for allowing me to return to the square."

This simple, meaningful phrase encapsulates his entire spirituality: boundless gratitude, devotion to the people, and a vital need for closeness. To the very end, Francis remained this humble shepherd who sought to walk alongside those he guided.

A world in prayer and a historic funeral

The papal funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, and will draw thousands of pilgrims and international representatives. The conclave to elect a new pope will then follow. Meanwhile, the universal Church is experiencing hours of intense reflection, marked by a shared emotion that transcends borders.

A final smile, a peaceful look, a simple word of gratitude… then goodbye. Pope Francis departed as he had lived: in simplicity, trust in God, and concern for others.
