The "Whirlwind", a pioneering model

Among the most famous inventions of this era is a device called "Whirlwind", patented in 1869 by the American inventor Ives W. McGaffey.

This vacuum cleaner operated using a hand crank which activated a bellows system producing suction.

Even though it remained impractical and relatively inefficient compared to modern devices, it marks an important step in the evolution of cleaning tools.

These early models show how much inventors of the time were already seeking to simplify daily life.

The arrival of electric vacuum cleaners

The real revolution arrived at the beginning of the 20th century.

With the advent of electric motors, vacuum cleaners gradually became more powerful and much easier to use.

In 1901, British engineer Hubert Cecil Booth developed one of the first commercially successful electric vacuum cleaners.

This innovation paved the way for the devices we know today: more compact, more efficient and suitable for home use.

An invention that transformed everyday life

Looking at this ancient object today, it may seem strange or difficult to identify.

However, these rudimentary machines played a vital role in the history of household appliances.
