That day, nothing foreshadowed such a discovery. An amateur diver was peacefully exploring the depths of a Russian river when he came face to face with a submerged car. What he didn't yet know was that this vehicle held a mystery more than a decade old. A mystery that the families of the two occupants had hoped to solve for nearly 12 years…

An unexplained disappearance

The story dates back to December 2005. Ilya, 25, borrowed his father's car to pick up his girlfriend Kira, 22, from work. But this ordinary trip took a tragic turn: the couple never returned home. That evening, they vanished without a trace.

A search was immediately launched. Appeals for witnesses, organized search parties, inquiries… but no solid leads emerged. Weeks passed, then years. Lacking evidence, the case was finally closed. But for Ilya and Kira's loved ones, the hope of finding them never faded.

A shocking discovery, 12 years later

It was in 2017 that fate took a turn. A local diver, passionate about underwater exploration, was cruising the waters of the Volga, in the heart of Russia. That day, near a popular beach, he spotted an unusual shape covered in sediment: a car.

Taken aback, he surfaced and immediately alerted the authorities. The next day, a rescue team equipped with a winch pulled the vehicle from the river. Inside: the remains of two young adults, still strapped into their seatbelts.

Thanks to documents found in the glove compartment — identity papers, personal items — the bodies were quickly identified: they were indeed Ilya Zhirnov and Kira Cherkasova.

The investigation has been reopened, but the grieving process has begun.

According to initial reports, the couple's car went off the road, likely due to winter conditions. Frequent black ice in the area is believed to have caused the vehicle to skid, crash through a guardrail, and plunge into the river, without witnesses or noise.
