A farmer has been studying law for 16 years in order to sue a chemical company that polluted his land.

 

Imagine a small rural village, surrounded by fields, where the air no longer tastes of the seasons but of agricultural chemicals. Imagine also a man, Wang, in his sixties, a humble farmer, who decides to say no. No to injustice, no to silence, no to the pollution that poisons his daily life. What he didn't yet know was that this "no" would transform into one of the most significant citizen battles against an industrial company. And that it would last… sixteen years.

When the earth turns into a minefield

It all began in 2001. On an ordinary day, the peaceful lives of Wang Enlin and his neighbors were turned upside down when their farmland was submerged by murky water. Literally. Wastewater, full of  chemical waste , overflowed from a nearby factory owned by Qihua Group, a company specializing in mineral processing.

The consequences? Hectares of land become barren.  The local council itself acknowledges that the soil is polluted  "for a long period of time ." For these rural families, it's a catastrophe: their crops are lost, their health threatened, their future compromised.

A fight that begins with… a dictionary

Faced with this injustice, Wang could have given up. But he chose another path. Without legal training and with only three years of schooling behind him, he embarked on an  extraordinary mission  : to understand the law.

With an old dictionary as his ally and a few books borrowed in exchange for… corn ( yes, really! ), Wang immersed himself in legal texts. He read, copied by hand, compared, and learned. For sixteen years, he educated himself on land rights and environmental protection in China. What others would have seen as an insurmountable mountain, he climbed,  patience after patience .

The strength of the collective

But Wang doesn't stop there. Alongside his research, he raises awareness among his neighbors. Together, they become aware of their rights and form a real  little community of citizens committed  to making their voices heard.

In 2007, their story caught the attention of the Legal Assistance Center for Victims of Pollution. Lawyers joined the fight. And in 2015, after years of waiting, the case finally went to court.

David versus Goliath, modern version

The trial pitted a  modest village against a multi-billion dollar industrial giant  . And yet, to everyone's surprise, the village won! In the first instance, the court ordered Qihua to pay compensation to the victims,  equivalent to approximately €110,000 .

Of course, the company is appealing. But for Wang, the determination is intact.  "Even if we lose, we will continue to fight," he declares, standing proudly in his muddy boots and old cotton jacket.

A lesson in courage that resonates far and wide.

Wang's story is not just one of a successful trial. It is a  symbol of perseverance , an example of resilience in the face of the powerful. In a country where  environmental issues are becoming crucial , his struggle reminds us that even the most modest voices can make a difference.
